MUSEUM OF SPORTS AND TOURISM

The Museum shows the origins of tourism, development of winter sports and nature conservation.

Start sightseeing the town from the Museum of Sports and Tourism to learn more about the history of this area and visit other places with greater knowledge.

Museum was established in 1974 and it is located in the historic Upper Lusatian house. It has vast collection which covers the entire Western Sudetes. The exhibit consists of three parts.

ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT OF TOURISM

The museum pieces and photograms show the most important events and the economic activity connected with exploration of the Giant Mountains and further development of tourism. The museum presents the activity of Walloons, miners, shepherds and laborants. All of them paved the way for future tourist trails. Original engravings and exhibits tell about the tradition of early tourism in the Giant Mountains including sedan chairs and horn sleighs.

THE HISTORY OF WINTER SPORTS

The Giant Mountains are among first places in Europe where people started practicing winter sports. Luge and skiing and many other sports developed here. Following the Second World War Karpacz became the centre of bobsleigh sport and luge in Poland. The collection of this part of the Museum allow for tracing the development of equipment starting from the oldest pieces of skis, snowshoes, sleighs and bobsleigh sleds. There are also numerous sport trophies of outstanding athletes as well as documents and personal effects of  dedicated activists. A separate part is dedicated to the Mountain Volunteer Search and Rescue (Górskie Ochotnicze Pogotowie Ratunkowe - GOPR).

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

A variety of museum pieces and colourful photograms present the natural environment of the Giant Mountains. This part  of the museum, by showing amazing examples of fauna and flora and talking about the geology and climate of the region, draws attention to the need to protect (maintain and develop) this beautiful part of our country for us and others. A two-headed calf is a true rarity of this section.

Next to the permanent exhibit, temporary exhibits are organized on the first floor.
