SKAŁKI NA KARPATCE

A primary forest and granite rocks in the town centre.

Very few towns can boast about such place as Karpatka. In the town centre you may find granite hill (726 m.a.s.l.) which characteristic appearance catches the eyes of visitors.

The peak and slopes are covered by granite blocks. On the surface of the rocks some forms of weathering appeared. They are called weathering pots (kociołki wietrzeniowe) spherical hollows resulting from uneven weathering of rocks. The flowing water carved some basins which made people believe that these were pagan sacrificial bowls.

In 18th century silver mines were opened in Karpacz, however they were not profitable. Today their faint trace can be found on the northern slopes of the hill. There are crosses cut on four-side pillars which probably indicated the boundaries of mining parcels.

At the turn of 19th and 20th century the network of trails and vantage points started covering the hill. It was one of the most visited walking routes in the town. Today the red tourist trail goes through that area.
