SKI JUMPING HILL ORLINEK

A ski jumping hill with the construction point K-85.

At the turn of 19th and 20th century in Karpacz first ski jumping hills were built of snow. Ski jumpers reached distances between a dozen and twenty-some meters.

First wooden ski jumping hill was completed near the current Orlinek Hotel in 1912 where a record jump 38.6 meters was made. The structure was modernised in 1932 and its construction point was 45 m.

After the Second World War the ski jumping hill was pulled down due to its bad technical status. The construction works on a new wooden hill supervised by Stanisław Marusarz began in 1946. Interestingly, the ski jumping hill was created according to his instructions without any designs or technical documentation. The athlete revealed some time later that the ski jumping hill was made in compliance with: '... the ideas in his head and experience acquired through visiting ski jumping hills all over the world'.

The wooden construction of Orlinek was not resistant to strong winds of the Giant Mountains and in seventies it was decided to erect a steel construction. In 1979 a new hill was opened named after Stanisław Marusarz.

In 2000 Orlinek was rebuilt again as part of the preparation for Junior World Ski Jumping Championships. The ski jumping hill is homologated by the FIS. The hill record is held by Adam Małysz who set it during Polish Senior Championship in ski jumping, jumping at a distance of  94,5 m.
