COURT TAVERN – BACHUS

One of the three old court taverns in Karpacz.

Karpacz, that is a settlement on the Crooked Mountain (Krzywa Góra) was established on a hill between two rivers: Łomniczka and Łomnica. The settlement takes its name from a curved row of buildings which was running toward the mountains.

According to the tradition the first farm was built at the site of today's DW "Bachus" and a court tavern existed here since 1602. It was owned by the Exners throughout the eighteenth century. That was the place where  all disputes arising between residents of the village were settled and judgements were passed on them. The current building was built in 1836. On its facade there are interesting wooden bas-reliefs depicting a village-head - judge and a monk holding a mug of excellent Great Mountains beer.

Karpacz is the only town in Poland, where three court taverns survived to our times. Today they function as a hotel, a guest house and a restaurant.
