OUTCROP OF HORNFELSES

The outcrop of one of the hardest rocks in Poland.

Hornfelses belong to the group of hard rocks more resistant to weathering.  In Poland they are found in Lower Silesia,  the most famous place of their location is Śnieżka. The name of the rock has German origins and means hornstone that is why in Polish language it is often called chert.

Hornfels was created when hot granite magma heated the rocks above 600°C, which resulted in their transformation. Currently, hornfelses form the characteristic cone of Śnieżka. A hornfels peak towering above the area made of less resistant to weathering rocks is called a monadnock.

In Karpacz, hornfelses are present not only on the peak of Śnieżka. They can be found in the centre of the town, too, at Obrońców Pokoju Street where a former 20th century quarry is located. It was formed during the construction of road between Karpacz and Wolf's Clearing (Wilcza Poręba). A part of hornfels floe was exposed as a result of construction works

Location: ul. Obrońców Pokoju (near Sandra SPA Hotel)
