Pedestrian street

Pedestrian street

For several years, the pedestrian street has been the tourist centre of Karpacz. Here you can buy the souvenirs and visit cafes, confectioneries and restaurants. Walking through this small part of Konstytucji 3 Maja Street may take five minutes, however, try to devote a little more time to this part of the city, take a close look at it, because it is worth it.

You may start your journey at the Sports and Tourism Museum, Kopernika Street. Pay attention to the beautiful building in which the museum is located, go inside and learn about the history and culture of the Karkonosze and the sports that are very often practised in our city. The shortest street in Poland is located vis-à-vis the museum. The street is thirty meters long and only one building, which happens to be a kindergarten, is located by this street. The street itself is named after Skrzaty Karkonoskie (Giant Mountains' Leprechauns). Take a walk to the nearby Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and read the information which is located on the square. Subsequently, move on to the park on the other side of the street. It is a place where you can learn about the history of mining in our area, look for secret Walloon signs carved on stones. The Bachus restaurant is located on the left side of the street. The restaurant, which used to be a Court Tavern (Karczma Sądowa), may be perceived as "witness" of the beginnings and development of our city.

Then you may walk along the pedestrian street. The church of Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is placed on the right. Thanks to the shape of the dome, crowning the tower, the church is often mistaken for the Orthodox Church. Nothing could be more wrong, it is rather connected to the Tyrolean presence who have lived in our area since the 18th century. In front of the church there is a building with the sculpture of Jesus on the cross. It used to be a meeting place for the Christians when there was no church in Karpacz yet.

On the right, there is a school building and a Sports and Entertainment Hall built for the needs of children, youth and residents. A few buildings above there is a Town Hall which happens to be the highest office in Poland. The Conquerors Square is located in front of the Town Hall. It is a place where the signs with shoe prints and the names of Polish climbers are embedded into the pavement. It is our local alley of fame. A stone was also laid here to commemorate the first ever winter ascent of the eight-thousander.

On the opposite side of the pedestrian street, near the Town Hall, there is the Historical Miniature Park (Historyczny Park Miniatur), where we can see models of the most famous buildings in Karpacz, just as they were at the beginning of the 20th century.

A little higher, on the left, a long meadow with ski-lift. These are the slopes of the Pohulanka mountain and the luge tracks run on the slopes of CRiS Kolorowa.

This is where the pedestrian street ends but do not hesitate to go to the park which is 100 meters higher. This is a good place to rest and the children can have fun on the trampolines. You can see a strange and somewhat scary figure guarding the entrance to Mysteries of the Giant Mountains Museum (Karkonoskie Tajemnice). This is one of the incarnations of the Mountain Spirit - Karkonosz. If you are curious why he was presented like that, you may look for the answers in the museums or ask the Karpacz residents.
